Speech Therapy


Speech-language pathologists are healthcare professionals educated and trained to evaluate and treat patients of all ages who experience speech, language, and/or swallowing problems. These problems can occur from birth or be a result of an illness, accident or disease. Patients may present with any of the following:

  • Stuttering
  • Articulation disorders (developmental articulation deficits, apraxia, dysarthria)-difficulty producing sounds correctly.
  • Language disorders - comprehending spoken or written language, as well as communicating thoughts, feelings, and experiences.
  • Aphasia – language deficit caused by stroke, brain injury, drug use, or illness that inhibits a person’s ability to comprehend and/or use language.
  • Voice disorders – due to abuse, misuse, or laryngeal pathologies.
  • Cognitive-Communication disorders – deficits involving attention, memory, or problem-solving.
  • Feeding/Swallowing disorders (dysphagia)
  • Autism

A Variety of Services and Settings

Our department provides services in a variety of settings through partnerships with local agencies, such as local school districts, head start programs, birth-to-three programs, home health agencies, local area hospitals, long term care facilities, and a local mental health agency. Our speech-language pathologists are also trained in several specialized treatment programs such as:

  • Vitalstim therapy – external neuromuscular stimulation treatment designed for patient’s who present with swallowing disorders.
  • Videostroboscopy with rigid endoscopy
  • Thermal stimulation
  • Summer Speech and Language Clinic
  • Modified Barium Swallow Studies
  • Speech Language Pathologists

War Memorial Hospital employs Speech-Language Pathologists who hold a master’s degree and have been awarded their Certificate of Clinical Competence by the American Speech and Hearing Association.
