War Memorial Hospital operates under the guidance of a 10-member Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership team. Together, these individuals oversee, plan, and deliver exceptional healthcare services to the people of Chippewa County and the Eastern Upper Peninsula.

Board of Trustees

Ten dedicated community members make up the War Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees. As a collective body, they are focused upon strategic planning, organizational financial health, quality metrics, and meeting community health needs while creating an environment that is satisfying to patients, employees, and providers.

David Jahn

President & Chief Executive Officer

David has served as the President/CEO of War Memorial Hospital since October 2005. Previously, he worked as Vice President of Marketing for MHA Insurance Company and CEO/CFO at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital in Manistique. His career in healthcare began in 1980 as staff accountant for Marquette General Hospital. 

David holds a master’s degree in business administration from Lake Superior State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration and accounting from Michigan Technological University.

David has been active on a statewide level with organizations that impact healthcare and rural healthcare delivery. Currently he serves on the board of the Michigan Center for Rural Health and is on the board of trustees for the Michigan Health and Hospital Association (MHA), which he previously led as board chairman. He has served as the president of the Upper Peninsula Hospital Council and the Upper Peninsula Health Care Network Board of Directors. 

David also serves the community through civic organizations. Locally, he has served as the chairman of the Sault Ste. Marie Rotary Club, member of the Sault Ste. Marie Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and member of the United Way of Eastern Upper Peninsula Board of Directors. 

David lives in Sault Ste. Marie and has four children and four grandchildren.

Kevin Kalchik, CPA

Kevin Kalchik joined War Memorial Hospital in 2004 and is the Chief Financial Officer. He is actively involved in the oversight of all aspects of fiscal service, technology, and revenue cycle.  Prior to coming to WMH, Kevin was employed by Munson Healthcare (Traverse City) and Plante Moran – a Certified Public Accounting firm. The majority of his professional career has been focused on the healthcare industry.

Kevin is a Certified Public Accountant with a bachelor’s degree in business administration (accounting major) from Central Michigan University. He was raised in Traverse City, Michigan.

Marla Bunker

Chief Nursing Officer/ Chief Operations Officer

Marla Bunker has been employed at WMH for more than 40 years, working her way up the ranks. From early days as a certified nurse aide, then on to emergency department RN, patient care coordinator, vice president of clinical services, and finally in her current role as Chief Nursing Officer/ Chief Operations Officer.

Marla has pursued her education with equal commitment. She has an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) from Lake Superior State College, a bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN) from Lake Superior State University, a master’s degree in healthcare business from Florida Institute Technology, and a project management certification from Boston University.

She was born and raised in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan and graduated from Sault High School. Marla and her husband Bryant (Kelley) Bunker have three grown children.
