War Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation SUMMER Sensory and Social Playgroup

“1 in every 6 children experiences sensory symptoms that may be significant enough to affect aspects of everyday life functions” (Ben-Sasson, Carter, Briggs-Gowen, 2009).

 WMH’s pediatric therapists aim to provide a resource for children and their families and provide practice for children with sensory strategies that ultimately encourage their social participation.

What: A weekly playgroup, based on the Alert Program®, with an emphasis on social skills and self-regulation led by occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists. Individual speech therapy sessions are provided prior to the play group, and individual occupational therapy appointments are provided at the conclusion of the group. Snack will be provided. Parent informational sessions held weeks 1, 3 and 6 in the conference room at start of sessions

Who: Children ages 4-11 yrs old who could benefit from positive peer interaction and sensory play

Where: War Memorial Rehabilitation Center, 2472 Ashmun Street, Sault Ste. Marie

When: Wednesdays, for 6 weeks beginning June 18th, Time TBD
